I suppose I should comment on Ian Sattler's comments in a Q&A at HeroCon that have been sliced and diced across the comics blogosphere (no links because I can't remember all the places I've seen them) ... A serious topic came up about how characters who are minorities who happened to be legacy characters like Ryan Choi are killed off so their caucasian counterparts can return and how they feel like they are being cheated or sidelined out of their roles. Sattler took a more serious tone.
What should you look for at the comic shop tomorrow? I'm glad you asked! ... Dark Horse has a hardcover omnibus collection of the three Blacksad stories by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido. I read the first two stories when they were published previously by iBooks; they are pretty good anthropomorphic noir stories with some gorgeous art ... I Box have the first volume of Stardrop, a sci-fi comic by Thieves & Kings creator Mark Oakley about an alien princess hiding out on Earth. I remember
And yet, I've hardly made a dent. I keep wondering if it's worth posting reviews for old books. Anyway, here goes ... Detective 864 ... No Batwoman; no doubt she's busy getting ready for her new book. The Batman story was just creepy, though well told. The Question story was okay. I've never been a big Vandal Savage fan ... Batgirl 10 ... This is getting better and better. Steph and Babs make a great team and I'd love for Gail to use Steph as a guest star in BoP. The Calculator, meanwhile, is
Something criminal has been brought to my attention. With recent direct to video animated features like Green Lantern: First Flight, Wonder Woman and Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, you'd think it was only a matter of time before someone as popular as Batgirl got her own film. Guess what? Turns out Warner Bros. was planning on that very thing but CHANGED THEIR MINDS. Gather your proverbial ...
Last week's abrupt ending to DC's CMX manga line really should come as no surprise. It was always the bastard stepchild of the DC publishing family; a sub-imprint of an imprint (WildStorm) that is headquartered across the country. One imagines that the manga line was originally developed because the powers-that-be at DC saw that manga was becoming popular, and so maybe they should dip their toes in the water and see what the what was ... The only surprises about CMX closing down are a) the
I've been making a real effort to get through my Leaning Tower of To-Read Books, so this edition contains even shorter than usual short (and maybe SPOILERY) reactions to recently read (though not necessarily recently published) books ... Stuff I paid for: ... Phonogram: Rue Britannia - Music-as-magic, and the identity that can create for a person, is a brilliant high concept, so much so that I didn't mind that I knew less than half of the bands namedropped throughout ... I've got some homework
Wonder Woman 43 ... I could look at this cover for hours. Just lovely. Diana's family troubles continue with her supposed aunt ready to destroy earth. Etta and Steve have been wonderful supporting castmates and I hope that continues with the new creative team ... Rise of Arsenal 2 ... I have no idea where this is going and where Roy will end up or even if I'll like it, and while I know some people haven't liked this, I have gotten caught up in the emotion. The art has been wonderful, and Lian,
Wish Upon a Star ... Originally uploaded by ShellySI've been wanting this since I saw the announcement months ago. I'd wanted the Cyclone figure, too, but when I saw it, I wasn't really thrilled with her face. Her expression was odd, off, weird, so I didn't buy her. But I might change my mind and buy her next week ... But Courtney is quite lovely ... I read the latest Wonder Woman, which has one of the loveliest WW covers ever, and the 2nd Arsenal issue, which was intense. I was saddened that
